Johanna De Schipper / Oostburg / 1982
Johanna de Schipper lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She was born and raised in West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, and moved to Amsterdam at the age of 19.
After graduating from the Rietveld Academy, she attended the two-year residency programme at Ateliers ’63.
The early works of Johanna de Schipper were merely a search for identity in a variety of disciplines, primarily collage, performance, installation and film.
After working on a series of street performances and installations as the duo “The New Collagists” with a fellow artist, she co-founded THE BOOKSTORE FOUNDATION in 2010. THE BOOKSTORE is a social housing community for artists, which makes it possible for artists to live and work in Amsterdam for an affordable rent.
Over the past ten years Johanna was involved in several curatorial projects such as SMBA museum nacht, THE BOOKSTORE PROJECT SPACE, Punt WG, Art Capital and LOCKBOX. It is important for Johanna to collaborate with other artist and to create opportunities to show their artworks.
At present,
(bri)collage plays an important role in Johnna’s life and work. She uses found objects and old pictures to compose new work. The nature of the work is very personal, and pictures often come straight out of the artist’s life or represent certain issues or characters. The personal themes are generally mixed with more contemporary themes such as mass media and feminism. The 60s & 70s are also an important source of inspiration. Her work exudes a sense of nostalgia.
